In 1890, two Kay Brothers, Herbert and Frederick, purchased an 1850s property named Amery.
The following year, the brothers ordered 30,000 Shiraz vine cuttings from Thomas Hardy and
planted them. The winery was completed in 1895, which is when the first load of
grapes was crushed. This was quite an achievement considering the fact that within four
short years, the Kay Brothers had planted 100 acres of vines, built a winery and produced
their first 9,100 liters of wine. Today, the estate is run by Herbert’s grandson,
Colin.
Block 6 of the winery refers to a section of the vineyard that has been there since 1892.
Small yields from hand-picked vines are traditionally processed via basket pressing
and open-top fermenters before the wine is matured in American and Eastern
European oak casks for 28 months. Other red wines go through the same process.
This estate is classified as a boutique winery as it produces less than 10,000 cases of
wine per year. Although their sales took off recently – after their wines were
highly rated in the Wine Advocate – most of
their prices remain competitive.
