Macallan has a distinction of producing the finest Scotch
whiskey in the world. Its single malt remains the standard against which others
are judged. Therefore, it is no wonder that the company has chosen to bottle
some of its prized and rarest whiskies in a limited edition collection of
Lalique Natural Color crystal decanters. A 55-year-old single malt in Lalique
crystal container is going for USD12,000. Only 420 of these bottles will be
produced.
In an interview with Reuters, Marc Laverdiere of Macallan outlined
the rarity of a 55-year-old single malt and the whiskey's ability to mature
gracefully with time. Prior to its release in 2006, the single malt had spent
half a century in a sherry oak cask in Easter Elchies House – home of The
Macallan in Speyside, Scotland. The dark rosewood colored whiskey has notes of
sweet dried fruits with hints of peat-smoke. The finish is soft, smooth and
spicy with lingering traces of citrus.
