The Freedom Ship has recently surfaced again on the
Internet, and doing the rounds on several notable trend-spotting websites. What
has not been reported so far is that since the idea of this ship has been pioneered
eight years ago, it remains an idea to this day.
Essentially, the Freedom Ship is a mile-long, 25-storey high
floating barge with 18,000 living units, priced between $180,00 to $2.5
million. Complete with parks, playgrounds, schools, hospitals, businesses,
shopping malls, and even a casino, this colossus is Freedom Ship
International’s vision of a self-contained floating city.
This city has the capacity to house a population of 40,000
full-time residents. Though this may conjure grandiose scenarios of
circumnavigating the globe and living out one’s fantasy, this is very unlikely
considering the size of this ship and the realistic speeds it could possibly
go. However, the company has claimed that coast-to-coast living is still
possible, with the ship docking at a different coastal city every two years.
For day-to-day transportation purposes, residents on the
Freedom Ship will rely on airplanes and ferries to commute to and from their
offices on dry land. Since the company’s last update in February 2005, there
has been no word on its proposed completion, so unless the polar ice caps start
melting dramatically, and Apocalypse becomes a grim possibility, the Freedom
Ship will just continue its mythical voyage in cyberspace.
