Samsung has signaled its intent to become a major player in
the digital camera and camcorder market as it unveiled 11 new products at its
inaugural Samsung Digital Imaging Roadshow in Singapore on Tuesday.
Higher mega-pixels seem to be the order of the day, as 9
out of the 10 new cameras that debuted boast of at least an 8.2 mega-pixel
camera resolution.
The pick of the crop is undoubtedly the NV24HD, which is a
10.2 mega-pixel resolution camera with a 24mm ultra-wide angle Schneider-KREUZNACH
lens, improving on its previous 28mm offering, the L74WIDE. The best part is,
it captures images, as well as videos, in high definition. This can then be
output to a HDTV via Samsung’s HDMI connection.

NV4 and NV30
Dual Image Stabilization, which basically eliminates the
problem of blurred images due to handshakes or low lighting, is also a
ubiquitous feature in most of Samsung’s new digital camera lineups.
What differentiates one series from the other, is the
different design styling and chop-changing of specifications that Samsung has
cleverly employed, to position each model.

For example, the S- Series are
targeted at beginners or first-time buyers who just want a basic
point-and-shoot camera.
The L- and NV- Series, on the other hand, appeal to more avid
shutterbugs, who may not demand professional quality SLRs but nevertheless are
tech-savvy and fashion-conscious, and want to be able to do much more with
their cameras.

The i8
The Samsung i8, though, offers a pleasant surprise - a pre-installed World Tour Guide which provides useful information on tourist
destinations in more than 29 countries around the world. It’s not
comprehensive, as Middle East is under-represented with only two countries –
U.A.E and Israel, and a handful of attractions. But for now, it’s a good start.
The i8 and NV4 also come equipped with an mp3 player, as well as a
portable multimedia player (PMP) for you to watch movies on the move.
While the cameras described above target the point-and-shoot
consumer, Samsung has not neglected the professional segment as well.
Its new
GX-20 DSLR camera boasts a 14.6 mega-pixel resolution with a proprietary
dust-resistant CMOS image sensor that has the smallest pixel size of 5.0
micrometers (or 5.0 μm) among DSLR cameras, and also features the Dust Removal
Function for removing dust spots.
For video enthusiasts, there’s the sleek VP-HMX20C
camcorder, which is fully HD (1920 x 1080p) and records high quality video at
25 frames per second (fps).
Miss that lightning-fast shot by Roger Federer? No
problem, the VP-HMX20C allows you to record fast motion sequences at 250 fps
for up to 10 seconds, and then slow it down dramatically during playback.
