Rolex set nine world records at Antiquorum’s vintage Rolex
auction last Thursday, held in commemoration of Rolex’s centenary year. The
auction, titled Revolution: The Evolution of the Rolex Sport Watch,
fetched US$8,515,260.
The winner of the morning – a 1979 “Comex” Oyster
Sea-Dweller with Perpetual Date, which went for US$248,800. Two 1967
Sea-Dweller Submariners were sold for US$237,600 each while a 1973 Submariner
originally issued in 1975 for the British military fetched US$166,800, as did a
1979 “Paul Newman” Oyster Cosmograph Daytona.
Due to the overwhelming interest, an additional sales room
had to be set up in Milan and connected to the New York auction room via video
conference, including 283 registered online bidders.
Antiquorum’s next auction will feature a private collection
of more than 700 contemporary watches, with prized timepieces like the F.P.
Journe’s Sonnerie Souveraine and Tourbillon
Souverain à Remontoir, Vacheron Constantin “Saint-Gervais”,
Patek Philippe “10 Days Tourbillon” Ref. 5101P and Glashütte Original "Julius Assmann - Tourbillon
3", and Richard Mille “Tourbillon RM003”, to name just a few.
The auction will be held at the
Richmond Hotel in Geneva on May 10 and 11, with previews in Monaco, Shanghai
and Hong Kong.
