China received a boost ahead of its
preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games when the city of Qingdao was named Asia’s
Maritime Capital at the recently concluded Christofle Asia
Boating Awards.
Held at the Le Royal Meridien in Shanghai, the annual
awards show, which is now into its fourth year, has grown to become Asia’s
premier event for recognizing the efforts of boat builders, marinas, clubs and
individuals in creating a diverse and exciting boating community.
China also scored wins with the newly created China Cup
International Regatta getting the nod for Yachting Event of the Year, and its
creator Wei Di honored with the Personality of the Year accolade.
Other notable wins included the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club,
which sailed away with the Best Asian Marine/Yacht Club of the Year. Singapore
came in for mention when its Marina at Keppel Bay was recognized with the Best
New Asian Marine/Yacht Club.
Barely four months old, the newcomer has already
staged a number of flagship events, including the ongoing Boat Asia 2008, which
runs from 24-28 April.
