A
new hotel has emerged in cosmopolitan Reykjavik, Iceland. Adopting the postal
code as its name, 101 Hotel is situated next to the Iceland Opera House and
alongside the city’s administrative buildings.
Formerly
the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party, 101’s
owner and designer Ingibjorg Palmadottir has gone
with minimalist design and a monochromatic color scheme characteristic of
Icelandic landscape. To sum up the hotel’s core design concept in two words:
space and art.
All 38 rooms and five suites in the hotel are furnished with
essential items for the busy executive: working desk, large bed, and wireless
internet. Warm oak flooring with adjustable temperature provides a cozy
ambience. Floor-to-ceiling mirror walls expand the open concept bathrooms, with
large showerheads and free-standing tubs.
Continuing the design concept of
space and art, the décor in the hotel’s casual restaurant and bar is
unabashedly simple, and features a massive art installation by Palmadottir’s
sister. Modern Icelandic and international cuisine is the order of the day.
The
hotel also has a lounge with a fireplace, a billiard room, and two function
rooms. For relaxation, there is a spa outfitted with a gym, a jacuzzi, a sauna
and a black-tiled plunge pool. Hit the 101 Gallery just around the corner of
the hotel for ongoing exhibitions held by contemporary Icelandic artists.
