Capable of propelling users to a blistering eight miles per hour underwater,
the Lunocet Monofin, a biomimetic (which means devices that mimic or are based
on nature) carbon fiber diving aid, gives average Joes the ability to leave
Olympic swimmers (who usually reach a maximum of five mph) trailing in their wake.
Its makers claim the Lunocet is the result of seven years of studying the
swimming morphology of dolphins. The Lunocet consists of a pair of silicon
blades or fins sheathed in either carbon fiber or fiberglass attached to an
aluminium and titanium footplate.
According to its designer Ted Ciamillo, with
the Lunocet strapped to the feet of swimmers, jumping out of the water to
perform "aquabatic" stunts is an achievable feat for those with enough practice
under their belts. The Lunocet Monofin is available now in a variety of options
and colors, and retails for between USD1250 to USD1800.
