Germany celebrates the 20th anniversary of the
fall of the Berlin wall this year, and its capital city Berlin is gearing up in
style to mark this historic milestone.
From now till Nov 9, the city takes a retrospective look on
the 20 years since the reunification of East and West Germany with a series of
themed exhibitions, guided tours, and a traveling Infobox that “tours” major
landmarks in Berlin. The events culminate in a staging of the symbolic fall of
the Wall using giant dominoes in a gala festival, aptly named “Festival of
Freedom”.
However, if you can’t wait till Nov 9, and would prefer a
more all-inclusive itinerary, check out Ritz Carlton Berlin’s “The Wall”
package.
Starting at 265 euros and 305 euros per night for single and
double rooms respectively, you get a stay in one of the hotel’s superior rooms,
tickets to the Berlin Wall Museum, a goodie bag of East German knick knacks
(think “Rotkäppchen” sparkling wine, “Zetti” chocolate chips and a “Goodbye
Lenin!” DVD), and even an authentic brick from the original Berlin Wall.
Due to the hotel’s convenient location at Potsdamer Platz
near a section of The Wall, you can also arrange through the hotel’s concierge
guided tours of the Wall on an East German cult vehicle - the Trabant.
Alternatively, stroll or cycle along the remnants of the 3.6m wall, the
re-opened Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie. Did we mention that the
hotel will greet your arrival with a “Gorbachev Cocktail”?
