A 1928 Krug now holds the world record for the most expensive Champagne ever sold at an auction.

The 75cl bottle, which hails from the highly treasured Krug Collection, fetched HK$164,560 (US$21,200) at an Acker Merrall & Condit's auction in Hong Kong, above its highest estimate of HK$120,000.

According to Serena Sutcliffe MW, Champagne expert and the head of the auction house Sotheby's, the 1928 Krug is 'one of the greatest Champagnes ever made'.

The exceptional vintage is said to have notes of apricot and honey, displays ample depth and complexity and yet possesses a fresh lively finish.

The previous record holder was a Methuselah (6 litre bottle) of Louis Roederer, Cristal Brut 1990, Millenium 2000 that went for US$17,625 in the US in December 2005.
