BMW has taken the wraps off its production 5 Series Gran
Turismo, a car that first showed up in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show.
The Munich-base automaker has largely kept to its original script, as
it seeks to create a new segment with this GT, which BMW says "combines
the characteristic features of a prestige saloon, a modern, highly
versatile Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo".
We
told you about the two-piece tailgate, which opens up for loading of small
luggage, as in a sedan. But when bulky luggage is involved, the entire tailgate
opens up like a hatch. Accordingly, cargo space can be variably expanded to
20.7 cubic feet, with the rear seats moved forward by almost four inches, or
folded down completely to create a maximum cargo capacity of 59.5 cubic feet.
Three
engine options will be offered: two gasoline and a diesel, mated to an
eight-speed automatic transmission imported from the top-of-the-line BMW 760i.
