Like confetti bursting from party poppers at the end of a celebration, the Giles Deacon collection is loud, colourful and a pop of surprise, giving the Paris Fashion Week one of its better finales.
Deacon’s collection for Spring 2010 is one that does not take itself too seriously. Classic styles and cuts are playfully presented with a tongue-in-cheek flair.

Blasé pencils skirts and the classic pant suit are given an update with metallic fabrics in turquoise and silver, so reflective they almost make the wearer look robotic. Fifties style circle skirts are generously layered with tulle and trimmed with orange plastic to give a look that is at once familiar and refreshing.

Definitely not a collection for those with arachnophobia, spiders make their presence felt throughout. They crawl creepily up the neck of one blouse and perch cheekily on the bodice of dresses. They make their appearances in huge numbers as printed motifs on sheath dresses and are embossed on leather warrior style outfits. Accompanying the spiders are dinosaur bags that look more like stuffed toys than bags.

The colour palette is bold and confetti bright. Orange, lime green, silver and turquoise are a favourite in this collection. Neutrals like black and nude play up the procession of colours on the runway. The overriding theme of Deacon’s latest collection is clear and can be easily summed up with two words – fun and youth.
