Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection captivates with its contradictions. Toying with the idea of innocence surviving in today’s complicated society, the canvas for Muccia Prada’s latest collection was an assemblage of doll-like models, complete with braids and Mary Jane shoes that echoed school girl style.

The collection seemed to tell a story of an innocent girl flirting with her wilder side. Prim and proper pantsuits with collared blouses introduced the school girl. Fabrics were in dark, sombre colours peppered with cutesy white prints of dogs, cats and swallows.

The blouses gave way to bustier tops that brought out the vamp. Translucent dresses of a nude mesh material elaborately adorned with sequins left nearly nothing to the imagination. Blouses were cropped to flaunt torsos. A female nude replaced the child-like animal prints and bellied the conservative high-waisted skirts it decorated.

Playing up the notion of innocence keeping its place despite continued complex influences, the transformation from innocent school girl to sensual vamp was never complete. The clingy dresses were accompanied by voluminous boleros in black brocade that hid the shoulders. Transparent mesh inserts disrupted the conservative style of the blouses.

This collection sees Miuccia Prada experimenting with the unconventional while simultaneously harking back to the youthful, girly style Miu Miu started out with. Clashing design elements – sombre colours with high shine sequins, conservative pant suits with revealing dresses and girly naivety with sensuality were merged into a sometimes jarring yet oddly interesting collection.
