Speeding in Style: The sumptuous Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG

The already impressive CL600 from Mercedes gets the super car treatment from specialists AMG. Motoring Expert Ian Kuah finds out more from AMG CEO Volker Morhinweg and discovers the firm's plans for the future.

Speeding in Style

In normal driving, the big coupé is perfect civility personified. The CL600 ABC (Active Body Control Suspension) has been recalibrated to AMG’s more sporty settings but the engineers took into account the massive rubber that would be used out of the box.

The result is so cosseting it defies the logic that a car with 8.5J and 9.5J x 20-inch wheels and rubber band 255/35ZR20 and 275/35ZR20 tires can possible ride so well. Best of all, the supple ride is achieved without the level of driver disconnect you get with the more softly set up CL600.

In the spacious cabin with its plush Nappa leather and Alcantara trim, the dynamic setting of the AMG sports seats grip you in fast cornering. With the huge range of adjustment for these seats, you cannot fail to get comfortable. The COMAND system allows you to tailor the massage feature all the way up your back. Whether you live in a hot or cold climate, the fan seats and seat heating will cope nicely.

The standard Mercedes CL600 is already a supremely comfortable coupé for four to cover continents in, and in terms of rear seat room and ride comfort, it beats the Bentley Continental GT hands down. A quintessential autobahn stormer, the CL65 AMG is icing on an already rich cake.
