In terms of totally unique experiences, the Poseidon Undersea Resort will be in a league of its own when it opens its hatches in 2009. The fantastical adventure will begin soon after check-in when you take an elevator ride 40 feet underwater to your room. It continues when you enter your suite where you will be greeted by the spectacle of tropical fish and marine life swimming outside your room.

Then there are the adventure activities. Dreams of piloting a submarine will be realized when you explore the ocean depths piloting a mini-submarine or take a ride in a submersible that is capable to going 1000 feet underwater.

If all goes to plan, a stay at the Poseidon will be the holiday of a lifetime for even the most jaded adventure traveler. It will also be a world first if it beats the developers of Hydropolis Underwater Resort in Dubai to the punch. Work on that planned $550 million resort is already underway and is targeted to open around the same time. Travel industry pundits, however, question the feasibility of the 2009 opening dates due to the complexity and scope of construction.

With competition fierce to be the undersea resort originator, it is no surprise that the location of the Poseidon’s Fiji resort is being kept under wraps. According to the developers, the island comprises approximately 225 acres, stretches a mile long and is surrounded by a 5000-acre lagoon with waters that range to 90 feet in depth. It is situated within a coral atoll that was chosen by the developers for its crystal-clear water and unspoiled tropical marine ecosystem.

For those with no inclination of going 40-feet underwater, the Poseidon Undersea Resort will also have 24 over-water villas, or bures as they are called in Fiji, and 24 beachfront bungalows.
