Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe

Like a fable, the Phantom Coupe is indeed a phantom of delight. As it turns out, she's also a sea of tranquility and an objet d'art.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, thousands of new millionaires are being created all over the world every year. Apparently, in India alone, 47 people become millionaires every day, with one billionaire added each month!

However, the number of ultra high net worth individuals who can very easily afford private jets and super yachts beyond the purview of mere millionaires remains relatively small.

One consequence of this boom in wealthy individuals is significant dilution of the words exclusive and luxury. With so many people soaking up the production of BMW, Boss, Rolex and other premium brands, the super-rich seek far greater exclusivity.

With sales of around 1,000 cars a year worldwide and an entry price of a quarter of a million Sterling, Rolls-Royce sets the bar high. With its price tag of £296,500, the new Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe is truly exclusive. Beyond this level, you enter the realm of bespoke coach building.

Today, I am driving a Phantom Coupe in its natural habitat, gliding along the roads around Marbella in Southern Spain, where the rich and famous live and play. And it is the only one in town.

Along with many other wealthy parts of the world, Rolls-Royce has sold a significant number of Phantom limousine and Drophead Coupes here, so the prominent grille topped by the Spirit of Ecstasy is no stranger to these parts.

In economically troubled times, overt displays of wealth tend to be reined in, even in wealthy enclaves. Judging from the reactions of others though, the Coupe's softer, more graceful lines are far less attention getting than either the monolithic four-door or the flamboyant Drophead Coupe. Admiration rather than awe is the prevalent reaction from onlookers.
