Many watch enthusiasts enjoy the view of the watch’s movement more than the view of the dial. Yet many of the watches mentioned have solid case backs, which hide the beauty of the mechanical movement.

For those who desire a top-end luxury timepiece that would be totally at home at a black & white ball, and which still possesses a GMT function to give the wearer a grip on reality, the venerable Patek Travel Time Calatrava (Ref. 5134P) is an excellent choice.

A cleanly elegant dial layout greets the wearer, with the home time being displayed by a second hour hand in a different material. The 24-hour indication of the home time is read off a subsidiary dial at 12 o’clock.

The watch lacks a date indicator, but is endowed with the ability to add and subtract the home time via two buttons on the left side of the case (just like in the Ulysse Nardin GMT +/-). An ingenious and highly practical feature.

In any case, any external imperfections would be more than amply compensated by the exquisite movement peering through the case back's sapphire glass. Finished to Patek’s exacting standards and boasting a Geneva Seal, this is a watch for the jet-setting head honcho.
