James McBride of Nihiwatu has been named Independent Hotelier of the World for 2016. Editor-In-Chief Jeff Weinstein made the announcement at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria, during HOTELS magazine’s annual Hotelier of the World Awards. The awards honors the work of leaders in the hospitality industry who have demonstrated excellence beyond their growing portfolios, and emphasize on the guidance and development of their teams and communities.

The Hotelier of the World awards recognizes leaders in hospitality who go far beyond growing their portfolios, focusing more on developing their internal teams and supporting the communities in which they operate, as well as the hotel industry at large.
The Managing Partner of Nihiwatu has partnered with Christopher Burch, American entrepreneur and investor, since Nihiwatu’s 2013 acquisition. The partnership saw the expansion and renovation of the luxury resort, which eventually led to its winning of several accolades including Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List, Asia Spa’s Resort of the Year, and Pure Life Experiences winner for Best in Design.

“I feel lucky that he can think through many layers of a customer’s needs. He thinks about the heart,” said Burch of McBride in an interview with Hotels. “[James is] extraordinarily creative and incredibly detailed.”
Hidden away 250 miles east of Bali on the island of Sumba, the beautiful resort is indeed no stranger to receiving its many awards, especially after its 2015 grand re-opening. Earlier this year, the hotel was also voted by Travel + Leisure readers globally as the World’s Best Hotel for its annual World’s Best Awards.
