Take a stroll down Bugis, and you might find yourself drawn to a glorious amalgamation. There, a modern metropolis simmers under the surface of local heritage as the sweet city space blends beautifully with its unmistakable old world charm.
I find myself taken by quick passing tourists moving alongside comfortable city folk, coursing through the cityscape past enchanting temples, overflowing markets and steely greys of busy buildings.
A particular low-rise structure sticks out in the bustling backdrop – a whitewashed building styled in the era of colonial days, injected with the high of modern times. When the InterContinental Singapore first threw open its doors in 1995, the hotel quickly gained traction for its elegant furnishings and world-class service, progressing through the years with various accolades and great honors.
Contemporary with a Twist
Now, five long years have signaled a sweet conclusion to a renovation project. The hotel's iconic Shophouse rooms and suites have resurfaced as the Heritage rooms and suites, following a successful multi-million dollar update courtesy of the award-winning FBEYE International. Every one of the landmark hotel’s 403 rooms buzz with contemporary sophistication and an elegant Peranakan vibe.
If you found the hotel’s façade to strongly remind of two-storey houses of an almost forgotten past, you wouldn’t be wrong. Vivid undertones of local heritage draw an image of a bygone era, filled with the fancy of colorful shophouses flowing with the charm of old days. The posh new update proves a gorgeous marriage between local charm and sweet sophistication, as you will come to know in the gorgeous Concierge Lounge, styled after the living room of a Peranakan home, finished with the thoughtful paraphernalia of old artwork and forgotten things. Other new spaces include reworked tower guestrooms, suites and a fitness centre, among others.
Among the hotel’s new highlights is the swanky Ash & Elm, whose pulsating European cuisine and excellent atmosphere makes for an unforgettable dining experience. The new culinary theatres, including the Charcuterie & Cheese Room, Wood-Fired Oven and an Open-Grill Kitchen add to the vivacious vibe of the new unveiling, offering a delightful smorgasbord in its international breakfast buffet, a la carte lunch selection, semi-buffet lunch and a la carte dinner menus. Of course, what’s a plush meal without a suitable drink? Over 100 handpicked labels of wine enrich the season’s menu, alongside a bounteous selection of fantastic wines.
If you’re one for high tea, the Lobby Lounge makes an atmospheric vibe for a lush afternoon of sweets and tête-à-tête, as you sit back in the breeze of stellar live performances. Expect to be spoiled with The Royal Heritage Afternoon tea’s excellent selection of TWG teas and coffees, served alongside its fantastic three-tier spread of classic English treats. The Lounge also serves up some delectable bites and great classics in an amazing East/West fusion from day to night.
