Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre à Sphérotourbillon

Called La Grande Maison, Jaeger-LeCoultre can always be counted on to create challenging works of high watchmaking, such as the Duomètre à Sphérotourbillon. Briefly, the Duomètre series features watches with two distinct timekeeping operations running on a single escapement but with separate power sources and discrete displays.

In 2012, the Duomètre makes a great leap forward for mechanical watchmaking, putting vanilla tourbillons to shame. Unmatched in high watchmaking at the present time, although there are close associations with a certain watch from Greubel-Forsey, the new Duomètre features a double axis tourbillon with cylindrical balance spring. To put it simply, the tourbillon completes one rotation every 30 seconds on the axis of its titanium cage. At the same time, it rotates twice as fast – once every 15 seconds – on a second axis, inclined at a 20° angle.

On the purely functional side, the watch displays hours, minutes and small seconds (with flyback function). There is also a second 24-hour indicator, useful for frequent travelers, and the usual double power reserve indicators (one for the time, the other for the movement). The watch has a 50-hour power reserve from calibre 382’s two mainspring barrels. For a watch this complex, Jaeger-LeCoultre manages to keep things modest, if a bit thick – the pink gold case measures just 42mm across but is 14.1mm thick.

We think the Duomètre à Sphérotourbillon is a highly significant watch for 2012 overall. The watch makes both our list of important watches from SIHH 2012 and tourbillons to watch in 2012.
