Celestial Light: Caran d'Ache Caelograph Collection

Caran d'Ache has unveiled an extraordinarily beautiful and technical trove of writing instruments that maps the movements of the stars. The Caelograph is dedicated to the night sky, and is available in limited editions of platinum, gold and rose gold.

The manufacture used a process known as mercator - indeed the first time this technique has been used on a pen - to accurately engrave a flat map onto a cylindrical surface. Conceived in 1569 by cartographer Gerardus Mercator, this ancient technique was used by today's craftspeople at Caran d'Ache to painstakingly chart all 51 constellations and 353 stars visible from the northern hemisphere, right onto the entire body of the pen.

Caelograph Alpha compass

More intriguingly, the Caelograph allows the user to see the position of the stars and constellations at any time of the year. A simple calibration of the pen reveals a rotating semi-transparent sleeve to appear, simultaneously revealing the visible part of the sky, the horizon line, the compass points and the zenith - a true marvel of innovation.

Offered in three versions, the Alpha (above) is platinum-coated and comes in 120 fountain pen and 120 roller pen specimens, the quantities a reference to the 12 zodiac constellations and 12 months of the year.

Meanwhile, the Zenith is crafted from solid rose gold and encrusted with 22 twinkling diamonds, to mark the 22 brightest stars visible from Earth. Every Caelograph object comes with a lifetime guarantee and is presented with an equally beautiful, matching compass and inkwell.
