AROUND THE WORLD IN 216 PAGES . . .

It may not seem like it from the incessant rainfall in Hong Kong of late, but summer is here. To set you in holiday mood, BACCARAT Magazine presents a bright and lively issue filled with sensational shoots, stimulating columns and features to take you far, far away from the urban grind.

Starting us off in style is our cover star Jun Kung. There’s never a dull moment in the company of the Macau-raised singer-songwriter. Posing with Bella the bulldog, Jun had the crew in stitches but in between his many quips he did get serious about the state of the local music industry.

Golden girls

After delving into the larger-than-life musician’s non-flip side, we flit around the globe to bring you a world of glamour and escapism. At Cannes in May, Hong Kong-based events director Emanuela Santi was tasked with managing a bevy of supermodels at the annual amfAR Cinema Against Aids benefit. Emanuela records the backstage manoeuvres before fashion’s golden-clad girls (and a few boys) stepped out to the cheers of a celebrity crowd and their couture gowns were auctioned by Sharon Stone.

Venice splash

Continuing in this international vein, our Art Spy columnist Katie de Tilly jets to Venice for the Biennale, where she checked out the Hong Kong pavilion featuring the work of local artist Lee Kit. Making the most noise in the art-filled city, however, was a contingent of Chinese performance artists, notably the provocative Xiao Lu, who jumped naked into the canal beside the Diocesan Museum, and Mad for Real’s Cai Yuan and Jian-Jun Xi, who screamed together in San Marco square.

We managed to nab Lee Kit for an in-depth interview before he left for Europe, and extending our arts reach travel to Taiwan – where Lee recently relocated incidentally – to meet Cloud Gate choreographer Lin Hwai-min and visiting Brazilian dance student Eduardo Fukushima, whom Lin trained as part of the Rolex Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative.

Fashionable jet-setting

The first of our four hot shoots this month comes from sun-soaked Bali. Our team, led by photographer Gordon Lund of Rost Production, stayed at Alila Villas Soori to stage a luxuriant surf-themed fashion spread. We also check into another all-villa Bali property, One Eleven in Seminyak, and visit Delhi to present two tales of India’s largest city – ‘Lushly Lutyens’ and ‘Innovative India’

Plenty of treats

Back home, we indulge in two most welcome trends. The rise of the French oven has seen an impressive crop of famous Paris patissiers take up residence in Hong Kong. In a city where the majority of residents don’t eat creamy dessert, this is a curious phenomenon. We find out why – sampling their goodies as we go - and meet the independent bakers who are giving the maestros a run for their dough. And finally we invite you to settle back for a laugh in the company of Hong Kong’s stand-up comedians.
