On June 7, Auctionata held its ‘Luxury Watches, Pocket Watches, Wrist Watches’ sale. The Berlin-based online art and auction house achieved total sales of about US$1.2 million. 86 percent of the 100 lots were sold. A huge chunk of the US$1.2 million, however, was contributed by a single watch. The rare Patek Philippe Reference 2499 started with the price, US$238,000. At 7:29pm CET, auctioneer Fabian Markus brought his hammer down to seal the deal at US$621,000.
The Patek Philippe Reference 2499, which successfully changed ownership at the auction, has set the record for the most expensive watch ever auctioned online. “This result shows that the market is ready for a new kind of auction. We are developing the auction of the future, which makes it easier for enthusiasts of valuable and rare objects to buy and sell them, no matter where in world they are, without having to forgo top-notch expertise and certainty," said Alexander Zacke, CEO of Auctionata.
