The Saker S-1 will give a whole knew meaning to personal aviation. Inspired by fighter jets and designed to appeal to more adventurous buyers, the Saker S-1 will be capable of hitting a top speed of Mach 0.99. Its normal cruise speed of Mach 0.95, is a few knots faster than the Gulfstream G650 and the Cessna Citation X. The latter two are currently the fastest private jets.
The S-1 will be a tandem two-seater which includes the pilot’s seat. We guess the buyer will have to have a piloting licence or hire a pilot to fly him around. That is like buying yourself a Lamborghini and hiring someone else to drive it. Powered by a pair of Williams FJ44-4 engines, the Saker S-1 will have an operating cost of about US$2 per nautical mile. Its 500 gallon fuel tank gives it a range of about 1390 nautical miles. The standard range can be increased to about 2000 nautical miles by adding two external 100 gallon tanks.
Despite its fighter jet-like looks, Saker says that special training would not be required to fly the S-1. Though we are wondering why the ejection seat are optional and not offered as part of the standard package. Saker is taking pre-orders for the S-1 which is expected to cost between US$5 million to US$7 million. Deliveries start in 2019.
