Amankora, Bhutan

Hidden in the mountainous valleys of Bhutan, Amankora is a series of five luxury lodges under the wing of Amanresorts offering guests the chance to experience life in one of the most exotic and isolated nations in the world. The five lodges – Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, and Bumthang – are arranged in a circular pattern, inviting guests to embark on their personal pilgrimages in this mystical Buddhist Kingdom.

Amankora Paro is a 30-minute drive from the country's only airport. Guests arrive via connecting flights from Bangkok and other cities (see below). Aman representatives are on hand to assist with visa and ticket arrangements. With the majestic snow-capped peak of the 7,300m high Mount Jhomolhari as backdrop, the Paro lodge is a simple wooden structure set amidst lush conifers. Within its natural rammed earth walls, there are 24 suites, each with wood paneled interiors, a king-size bed, a traditional bukhari (wood-burning stove) and a terrazzo-clad bath, and spa facilities.

These facilities are also available at the other four Amankora lodges, the difference being architectural style and the breathtaking scenery unique to each lodge. For example, the Thimphu lodge features traditional dzong architecture – towering whitewashed walls surrounding an inner complex of courtyards and temples (characteristic of monasteries in Bhutan). The Punakha lodge, on the other hand, is a traditional three-storey farmhouse beautifully dolled-up in preserved vegetable dye wall paintings and accessible only by a suspension bridge.

Guests can opt to either spend a few days at one lodge or take up a tailor-made itinerary that includes stays at one or more lodges in what Amanresorts dubs the "Amankora Journey".
