The Ambassadors' Ball 2009
The Ambassadors' Ball 2008
The Ambassadors' Ball is an annual fundraising event jointly organized by the Hong
Kong Design Centre and Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design. Now into its second year
and coinciding with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the
People's Republic of China, the theme of this year's Ball will be "Serving the People," with
the full support of the liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the
Hong Kong SAR and the Y. Elites Group.
"Hong Kong Ambassadors of Design (HKAD) is all about capturing the creative imagination
of the public. We believe that cultural and creative experiences enliven societies
and foster growth. My personal hope for HKAD is that it will become a crucial platform
aiming to help heighten awareness within Hong Kong localities, and help promote
Hong Kong as a design city in the international arena. The funds raised will go
to activities aiming to spread such a message. HKAD's feature events are Detour,
Brick by Brick, Pecha Kucha and Cut & Paste," said Joyce Tam, co-Chairman of the Ambassadors' Ball 09.
"Proceeds (from the Ball) will help build a platform for the dialogue of design in Hong Kong, as well as promote new and existing local talent," added Justin Ng, co-Chairman of the Ambassadors' Ball 09.
Being a group of leading Hong Kong designers and creative people, you would expect
something really special in the art direction for the upcoming ball and you won't
be disappointed. Mr. Alan Chan, the renowned designer with a penchant for reinterpreting Eastern and Western cultures in a style that juxtaposes nostalgia with the contemporary, has kindly agreed to direct the decor of the Ball.
Together with an auction featuring works from top Chinese artists, this event promises
to be a unique showcase of the design and creative talents of contemporary China.
"We have the fortune of soliciting the internationally renowned home-grown designer
Alan Chan's service in directing the entire decor of the ball. The event promises
to be a one-of-a-kind experience showcasing the design and creative talents of modern-day
China. In the Modern China setting, dinner patrons will enjoy performances by various
home-grown artists who have agreed to perform pro-bono in support of Hong Kong's
art and design industry," said Tam.
Tam says that eager art collectors should look forward to the live auction (for
pieces above HKD40,000) and silent auction (HKD40,000 or below), featuring seldom
seen works from the likes of Michael Young, Wang Huaiqing, Simon Birch and Herman
Miller, among many others. To end the night, the HKAD will be hosting a rocking after-party for the city's movers and shakers in the W's living room featuring sounds by DJ duo The Breakfast Club. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door on the night of the event.
