7 Cool, Cultural Events to Check Out This June

This June brings some of the coolest cultural events, from a retrospective of famed artist Yayoi Kusama from Japan to English electro-soul duo HONNE’s debut shows in Singapore:

SICK SCENTS - A FRAGRANT EXHIBITION (JUNE 1 - 25)

British-born, Singapore-based multimedia artist Mojoko is showcasing his limited edition series of seven perfumes created in collaboration with scent designer Terry Jacobson (Founder of Allsense and Oo La Lab). Inspired by contemporary Asia, the unique fragrances combine traditional scents such as Mandarin with more unexpected modern, scents such as bubble gum. The best part? HONNE - LIVE IN SINGAPORE (JUNE 2 & 3)

The English electronic music duo may have only formed just slightly over two years ago, but they have already racked up millions of plays on Youtube and Spotify. Consisting of James Hatcher (producer) and Andy Clutterbuck (vocals), the duo is known for their soulful hits like Warm On A Cold Night and Someone That Loves You. Their debut show in Singapore was so in-demand that a second night has been added. Esplanade Annexe Studio, 1 Esplanade Dr, 8 – 10pm. S$60 (standard) / S$80 (doors) per ticket

SANDS OF TIME (JUNE 8)

This charity event and photography exhibition hosted by non-profit entity Women on a Mission (WOAM) aims to raise awareness and funds for underprivileged and troubled women and girls in Singapore and Iran. The event will also celebrate WOAM’s fifth year anniversary, and share the team’s experience of becoming the first ever all-female team to cross Iran’s Dasht-e-Lut desert on foot. YAYOI KUSAMA: LIFE IS THE HEART OF A RAINBOW (JUNE 9 – SEPT 3)

As the first major retrospective of famed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama to be held in Southeast Asia, expect more than 120 works spanning seven decades, ranging from paintings from the 1950s to spectacular installations. Besides her iconic dots, nets and pumpkins, don’t miss the famous Infinity Mirrored Room that is sure to make for a very Insta-worthy snap. National Gallery Singapore, 1 St. Andrew’s Road. FRANKENSTEIN (NC16) - ESPLANADE (JUNE 10)

For one afternoon only, the Esplanade Theatre will host the National Theatre Live’s thrilling broadcast of Frankenstein. A sell-out hit at the National Theatre in London in 2011, the production is directed by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle, while English actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller takes on the roles of Creature and Victor Frankenstein respectively. ULTRA SINGAPORE (JUNE & 11)

Arguably the world’s biggest electronic music festival, Ultra Singapore is back for a second run, this time with an extensive lineup including the likes of American electro house musician Steve Aoki, Dutch DJ and producer Tiesto and Indonesian rapper Rich Chigga. Expect a wild time partying hard into the night. Ultra Park, 1 Bayfront Ave, 12 – 10.30pm. US$105 (S$145) – US$178 (S$246) per ticket

Downton Abbey: The Exhibition (17 June)

NBCUniversal International Studios and Imagine Exhibitions has teamed up to kick off the global exhibition for the popular English period drama Downton Abbey. The immersive, international tour will begin in Singapore on June 17, before travelling to the US in 2018. Expect to see various characters, costumes and locations as well as never-before-seen footage and historic moments. Marina Bay Sands, 10 Bayfront Avenue.
