Five Things You Didn’t Know About Prince Harry

Prince Harry was recently in Singapore to take part in a charity polo match, where his team won 5-2 with the prince himself scoring two goals. The prince is no stranger to the spotlight, but there are still some little known facts you may not know…

Actual Name

Though popularly known as Prince Harry, the prince’s full title is His Royal Highness Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales. Prince Harry was christened at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor by the Archbishop of Canterbury in December 1984.

Decorated Prince

The three medals Prince Harry has been decorated with so far include the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan in 2008 and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

No Pockets

At the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in April 2011, Prince Harry did not have pockets in his military uniform to carry his brother’s wedding rings. Kashket and Partners, the bespoke tailors behind the prince’s Blues and Royals military outfit, decided to sew in a secret compartment in the uniform’s gold embroidered cuff to keep the Welsh gold rings safe.

Captain Wales

Because the royal family does not have a fixed surname, Prince Harry was known in the army as "Captain Wales". The territorial suffix was used in place of a surname, where “Wales” signifies the area over which his father holds title.

Great Philanthropy

The prince’s charity work and philanthropic spirit was likely instilled from a young age, when his late mother Princess Diana took Prince Harry and Prince William around AIDS wards and homeless projects. Princess Diana famously shook the hand of a man suffering from AIDS in front of the world’s media, during a time when HIV and AIDS was mistakenly believed as a virus that could be transmitted by touch. Continuing his mother’s legacy, Prince Harry founded Sentebale in 2006 with Prince Seeiso, supporting youth in South Africa living with HIV and AIDS. The prince is also known for supporting a number of charitable activities and projects around the world.
