Alexander Wang “Disrupts” with Surprise Adidas Collaboration

You wouldn’t doubt Alexander Wang as a bona fide ‘sneakerhead’ – the designer even admits that he is so, and even once designed a collection revolving around his favorite sneakers.

Now, the Taiwanese American fashion designer has dropped a rather surprising collaboration with adidas Originals, unveiling a line of footwear and apparel that desires to “disrupt” the iconic adidas look without destroying its familiarity. The unisex collection will be established in a sort of “deconstruction”, as one can expect in the adidas sneaker, and will also feature a rotation of the iconic trefoil logo.

The new line was unveiled in a surprise finale to the designer’s Fashion Week runway show on Saturday night. A minute-and-a-half film played in the background as the models, who previously modelled Wang’s eponymous label, changed into the new adidas Originals’ collection. All 70 of the black-clad models, which included Madonna and Nicki Minaj, marched onto the runway in what Wang described as "the biggest show we've ever done."

Indeed, the surprise collection offered a rather marked contrast to Wang’s Spring collection for his own label, which unfolded in a sort of beach-worthy, whimsical vibes in warm-weathered colors.

"It was really about saying, how do we take something and shake it up a little, disrupt it, but at the same time not change it so much where it doesn't feel right," said Wang.

"I grew up on sneakers," he added. "It's a very interesting time obviously for (all) sportswear, the whole market and how people utilize fitness, incorporate it into their daily uniform. So the sneaker is something that I've always been very close to. And it's always been something that's very hard for us to do in house, to be honest — obviously Adidas has the most innovative resources."
