Belmond Andean Explorer Will Be South America’s First Luxury Sleeper Train

You could cruise past the world’s most breathtaking vistas as you traverse Peruvian Andes, as you embark on one of the highest rail routes on earth. The new train, set to be the first luxury sleeper train in South America, takes you from Cusco to Lake Titicaca and Arequipa in Peru, over one or two night journeys.

Set to be unveiled next May in 2017, the Belmond Andean Explorer in Peru allows for you to take in natural wonders and ancient kingdoms as you sit back in the comfort of luxury. In fact, the Peruvian Andes and its lush nature is exactly why the train was designed – to provide that window for a connection between man and nature.

Guests can choose from four journeys including the three-day, two-night ‘Peruvian Highlands’, which takes you from the capital of the ancient Inca Empire to the peak of the Andes, where you will reach an altitude of almost 5000 meters. You will visit the remote villages of Puno, pass Lake Titicaca’s floating islands, and move towards the heart of Arequipa (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The journey’s highlights include a chance to journey into the vast Colca Canyon, a significant trekking destination renowned for being among the world’s deepest canyons.

Tor an overnight getaway, the ‘Spirit of the Andes’ takes you from Lake Titicaca to Cusco, across the Altiplano.

But it’s not just the outside that will be beautiful – one can expect a tranquil ambiance within the train, with plush interiors designed by Inge Moore of The Gallery HBA, à la soft tones of Alpaca wool against an Andean grey and inspired textures reminiscent of hand-woven fabrics in Peru.

Up to 68 guests can be accommodated in the Belmond Andean Explorer, which offers tasteful, en-suite cabins. That includes 20 twin cabins, two double cabins and twelve bunk bed cabins for two. For excellent views, head over to the Observation Car’s open-air deck. When night falls, the Lounge Car is the place to get some refreshing drinks as you sit back and contemplate the day. Grab a bite in the train’s two Dining Cars, where local ingredients form the base of fresh menus, curated seasonally by chefs at Belmond Hotel Monasterio, Cusco.
