Belmond to Launch New Luxury Barges in Champagne and Alsace in 2017

Belmond has announced the addition of two new luxury boats to the Belmond Afloat in France, scheduled to launch in summer 2017. Belmond Pivoine and Belmond Lilas will sail across Alsace and Champagne, over their iconic rivers and picturesque canals, as guests take in the gorgeous French countryside.

From private visits to family-owned vineyards, breweries and charming Châteaux, there’s much to discover in the six-night itineraries. Belmond Pivoine will cruise along Meaux and Châlons-en-Champagne, passing the sprawling hills of the River Marne and Canal Lateral de Marne, where you will spot some charming villages by the canal. If you wondered whether the name of the popular Champagne had anything to do with the popular sparkling wine, you figured right, but there’s more. In addition to its namesake, the Champagne region of France is a rich cultural hub, where you will appreciate a visit to the historical city of Reims and the famous manicured gardens of Château Vaux-Le-Vicomte.

The Belmond Lilas will voyage along the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, through at the core of Alsace, where guests will have the opportunity to visit the small towns of Saverne and Lutzelbourg. But a trip to the culinary capital of the Alsace region, Strasbourg, will ultimately prove a highlight, as you engage in German and French-inspired culture and architecture.

Designed individually to reflect the flowers’ tones and the sprawling landscapes they represent, the new barges take inspiration from Biophilia, a design approach that fills the interior with elements from the outside world.

“I want to create spaces where guests can really unwind and reconnect with what is important in their lives,” says Inge Moore, Interior Designer from The Gallery HBA, London. “I believe in order to do this, we need to look back towards nature – an antidote to our busy everyday lives. The aim of the design is to kindle a strong connection with the living, breathing world – a design which embraces a love for life and all pure living forms’.

Each barge accommodates between four and 12 passengers with en-suite cabins, a living space and a dining room, with an experienced crew at hand.
