Terry Richardson Shoots 2010 Pirelli Calendar

By LAWRENCE TAN

Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli unveiled the 37th edition of its much anticipated calendar at a global premiere event held in Old Billingsgate, London a couple of weeks ago.

Pirelli’s 2010 Calendar is shot by famed American photographer Terry Richardson, whose work has appeared in major fashion titles like French Vogue, British Vogue, GQ, Harper's Bazaar, and whose clients include Gucci, Sisley, Chloe and a host of Hollywood celebrities and fashion icons.

Staying true to his provocative style, Richardson has chosen to illustrate the models with a play on natural femininity and stereotypes that recalls the approach of his predecessors like Robert Freeman (who shot the first edition Pirelli Calendar in 1964), Brian Duffy in 1965, and Harry Peccinotti in 1968 and 1969.

Said Richardson: “A great photographer captures the moment – that’s why I shoot without extra equipment and without assistants.

“My technique is the absence of technique: the lens is my eye, my charisma, my ability to capture moments of truth, whatever they may be, picture angles, use of color, light, scenery – these have always been the essential aspects of my photographic art.”

The 11 models who appear in the Calendar are Catherine McNeil, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Miranda Kerr of Australia, Eniko Mihalik from Hungary, Marloes Horst of the Netherlands, Lily Cole, Daisy Lowe, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley from the UK, Georgina Stojilijkovic of Serbia and two Brazilian natives, Gracie Carvalho and Ana Beatriz Barros.

Because of the explicit nature of the Calendar, we will leave you with some teasers from the backstage shoots that are appropriate for the purpose of this publication.
