Hainan Boosted by Lottery Rule Transformation

In a landscape changing move, lottery regulations are being relaxed in Hainan - the Chinese, tropical island paradise. This will help cement the region's position as a resort of global standing.

Wang Xuehong, director of the China Center for Lottery Studies, described the changes: "Now the rules allow pari-mutuel sports lotteries to bet on the results of domestic and international sports events that are held in Hainan, which will be a big step forward for China's 22-year-old lottery business."

She explained that sporting events involving the likes of cycling, sailing, beach volleyball and horse racing could all be the subject of the pari-mutuel lottery in the future, conditional on the premise they are held in Hainan.

These developments are hugely significant in their own right however, they also represent just one facet of the Chinese government's agenda to make Hainan China's premier travel destination. The lottery changes join duty-free shopping, a diluted visa policy and a crackdown on illegal tourism as reasons why Hainan is reaching the pinnacle of the trade.

Tang Yibo, the supervisor of the holiday department of ctrip.com (China's leading online travel service) explained: "Sanya in Hainan province is already in the top few cities in China in terms of tourism facilities and service quality.

Now with the central government's policy support, I believe Hainan will elevate itself in many aspects, such as infrastructure and service, to an international level."

It's one more reason why China's first luxury lifestyle event, Hainan Rendez-Vous 2010 promises to be the event of the year.
