Taking place on May 3, the evening's co-chairs were Oprah Winfrey; Patrick Robinson, Executive Vice President of Global Design for Gap; and Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue.

The gala marked the opening of the exhibition 'American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity' for which Burberry dressed a host of stars including Emma Watson, Claire Danes, Hugh Dancy, Daniel Craig and Rosie Huntington Whiteley.

The exhibition itself explores developing perceptions of the modern American woman from the 1890s to the 1940s, as Andrew Bolton, Curator of The Costume Institute, explained:

"The show looks at fashion's role in defining how American women have been represented historically, and how fashion costumes women into archetypes that persist in varying degrees of relevance."

The exhibition will run until August 15, 2010.
