Tibaldi Pen Sells For $8M At Shanghai Auction

By William Stolerman

A pen made by Tibaldi has sold at an auction in Shanghai for a record-breaking $9 million. Named Fulgor Nocturnus, it's inspired by the 'divine' proportion of Phi.

Equating to the ratio 1:1.618, Phi appears in vast amounts of natural and man-made phenomena, from plant veins to the Parthenon.

In the case of the pen, when it's closed the ratio corresponds to the pen's cap in relation to the visible portion of the barrel.

The extraordinary sum was in large part thanks to the pen's uniqueness (only one exists) and the jewels that adorn it - 945 black diamonds and 123 rubies.
