Ode to Love: Daligramme Bags by Lancel

The Daligramme by Lancel

Running the gamut from a painter to sculptor, a trendsetter (read: his gravity-defying moustache) to filmmaker, Salvador Dali was a man of many geniuses. Yet, the surrealist painter was also a die-hard romantic. His love affair with Gala Dali – who would later become his wife, his collaborator, his manager but above all, his muse – was a much publicized one, not least because Dali had a penchant for making public declarations of love.

Soon after their marriage, Dali started signing his works with both their names, writing “"(i)t is mostly with your blood, Gala, that I paint my pictures," In the late 1960s, he created an eight character alphabet in honor of her. Comprising stylized versions of three letters - G for Gradiva-Gala, D for Dali and S for Salvador – he would later dub it the Daligramme.

During the 1970s, Lancel collaborated with Dali to create Le Dali, a bag embossed with the secret love code. Le Dali was given to Gala as a gift. Last September, the French maison reinterpreted Le Dali to launch the Daligramme, an expansive collection of handbags, accessories and leather goods that pays homage to the Spanish artist.

Now, the second set of Daligramme handbags have arrived in Hong Kong. Crafted with precious lambskin and satin, each bag is delightfully accented with – like the very first Dali bag - an 18-carat gold bike chain.
