According to an ABC report, Noman Siddiqui, a Zoology professor from the Marine Fisheries Academy in Chittagong, was quoted as saying the gleaming golden scales of the snapper, which are typically red or silver in color, was the primary reason it commanded such a high price.

Mr Siddiqui also added that just "three or four golden snappers are caught in the Bay of Bengal" every year. The snapper's firm flesh and bladder are considered delicacies throughout Asia.
