Carlos Slim Tops the List for the World's Richest Football Club Owners

What does one do, if she/he has US$70 billion net worth? Buy controlling stakes in a football club. At least that’s what Carlos Slim did in September 2012. Though he’s trailing closely behind Bill Gates in terms of wealth, he is the world’s richest football club owner, according to a report released by Wealth-X.

His company America Movil bought a 30 percent stake in Grupo Pachuca, whose holdings include first division Mexican football clubs Leon and Pachuca. Second on the leader board for the world’s wealthiest football club owners is Amancio Ortega, founder and CEO of Zara. He holds a stake in Deportivo De La Coruna from Spanish Football League team.

“Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who recently celebrated his 10 years as owner of Chelsea Football Club, seems to have laid the foundation for other billionaires to include a prestigious football team as a must-have trophy asset. Wealth-X data shows that 12 out of 20 have been owners for less than 10 years.” Said Wealth-X CEO Mykolas D. Rambus.
