Full Throttle: Bonhams' World Record Sale of Mercedes-Benz W196

A while ago, we mentioned that Bonhams was set to auction Fangio's legendary F1 Mercedes-Benz W196 Grand Prix car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Well, the auction is over and judging from the sales figures, Bonhams has really knocked this one out of the park. The auction house made automotive history on July 12 when it sold the F1 Mercedes-Benz W196 Grand Prix car for £19.6 million.

This makes the W196 the most valuable automobile to have ever sold at an auction. It beat the previous record of just over £10 million set by a Ferrari in 2011. Besides the world auction marquee record for the Mercedes-Benz W196, Bonhams also set a new world record for the highest price for a Maserati at an auction. A 1955 300S Sports-Racing Spider sold for just over £4 million.

"Bonhams enjoys an enviable position as the auction house that holds the most world records for premier motoring marques." said James Knight, Group Motoring Director for Bonhams.
